What a grand island home looks like

Old Mallorcan manor houses keep thick stone walls, shaded courtyards and olive groves tended for generations. Restored well, they hold the calm of the countryside with every modern comfort.

On the coast the language changes. Clean white volumes, deep terraces and infinity pools face the sea, usually behind gates and mature gardens that keep the house private.

Planning rules on the islands are strict about rural and coastal land, so ask a local specialist to confirm what a property allows before you plan to extend or rebuild.

Choosing your island

Mallorca, often written Majorca, is the largest island and the most varied. Mansions in Mallorca range from the gated hills of Son Vida above Palma to the artists' village of Deià in the Serra de Tramuntana and the harbour light of Port d'Andratx.

Ibiza is quieter than its reputation. Its finest homes look out from the cliffs of Es Cubells or hide among pine hills and farmland inland, far from the clubs.

Menorca and Formentera move at a more discreet pace, with protected landscapes and fewer grand homes. If the islands are only one option, compare them with Andalusia, Catalonia and Madrid.
