The coast follows the province of Málaga from Nerja to Manilva, with Sotogrande just beyond, the mountains close behind and an airport in the middle. Winters are mild, summers are long. The Costa Blanca and the Costa Brava have pages of their own.

The towns of the Costa del Sol

West of Marbella, Estepona keeps an old town of flower-lined lanes, and the New Golden Mile that links them holds many contemporary villas. Manilva ends the province; Sotogrande, just across the border in Cádiz, adds polo, a marina and generous plots.

East of Marbella the coast turns more local: Mijas with its white hilltop village, Fuengirola and Benalmádena with their marinas, then Málaga itself, a real city with penthouses over its port. Beyond it, Rincón de la Victoria and Nerja close the coast to the east.

Costa del Sol luxury homes for sale

Costa del Sol houses follow the land. On the front line, villas and penthouses with the beach at the end of the garden, always the scarcest. On the first hills, gated communities where a villa gains a view and privacy. Higher still, estates with land, silence and the whole coast below.

Between them sit townhouses in the old quarters, low-rise apartments with gardens, pools and a concierge, and golf homes. Costa del Sol golf is a way of life as much as a sport, and many of these houses look straight onto the fairways. Luxury property here begins at more than a million euros and rises from there.

Some buyers arrive looking for bargain properties. Costa del Sol value, at this level, means something else: a home a few streets back from the front line, a resale that needs a new kitchen, or a new build chosen early. New build or resale

Among new builds, Costa del Sol architecture is mostly contemporary: flat roofs, floor-to-ceiling glass, pools that meet the horizon. Much of the recent building has gone up along the New Golden Mile and in the hills of Estepona, Benahavís and Mijas.

Off plan, you choose the finishes and watch the house rise around them. Resale gives you mature gardens, settled neighbours and the keys much sooner.

Costa del Sol estate agents

Costa del Sol estate agents work differently from those at home. The same house is often offered by several agents at once, and the finest homes tend to change hands quietly, before they are ever advertised. Choose one who knows which houses are truly still available, knows the specific town, speaks your language without losing the seller's, and will walk away from a house that is wrong for you.
