The Sierra de Guadarrama separates the province from Madrid. On its northern side lie the city of Segovia, with its Roman aqueduct and its Alcázar, and a scatter of walled villages.

Homes between the aqueduct and the mountains

In the historic centre, homes tend to be restored townhouses under careful heritage protection. Around La Granja de San Ildefonso, with its royal palace and gardens, houses look straight up at the peaks.

Further north, Pedraza and Sepúlveda keep their medieval walls, and the gorges of the River Duratón cut through open farmland. Ávila lies to the west and Valladolid to the north, each with its own quiet countryside.
