Mahón, the capital, sits on a natural harbour counted among the finest in the Mediterranean, and its waterfront houses look straight onto the moorings. Between them lie farmland, wooded hills and inland towns such as Alaior and Es Mercadal.

The north is wilder, shaped by the wind, with darker rock, a more dramatic sea and the fishing village of Fornells on its bay. Around Sant Lluís, in the southeast, whitewashed villas sit among low stone walls close to the water.
