What makes buying here different
The Basque Country sets and collects most of its own taxes through its provincial councils. Purchase and ownership taxes can differ from the rest of Spain, and rules change, so a specialist who knows the region should confirm them.
Each city keeps its own character. Bilbao, in Vizcaya, spreads along its estuary, with broad avenues and the Guggenheim museum. San Sebastián, in Guipúzcoa, curves around La Concha bay. Vitoria-Gasteiz, in Álava and seat of the Basque government, is calmer and greener.
The steps themselves will feel familiar: an NIE number, an independent lawyer, careful due diligence, the signing before a notary and registration at the land registry. Can British buyers still buy property in the Basque Country?
Yes. Since Brexit, British buyers are treated like other non-EU nationals: the purchase is open to them, while longer stays depend on a residency route that is separate from the property.
