Soria lies in the east of Castilla y León, bordering La Rioja and Aragón, with Burgos to the north-west and Segovia to the south-west. The River Duero rises in its northern mountains and passes the capital on its way west.

Stone, pine and open country

The Picos de Urbión, home to the glacial Laguna Negra, are wrapped in dense pine forest. To the west, the Cañón del Río Lobos is shared with Burgos, and El Burgo de Osma gathers around its cathedral.

Towards the south, Medinaceli keeps a Roman arch on its hilltop, and the ruins of Numancia stand near the capital. The poet Antonio Machado lived here and wrote about this landscape with lasting tenderness.
